what is ferrochrome slag
Ferrochrome slag is a waste material obtained from the manufacturing of high carbon ferrochromium alloy. This slag is formed as a liquid at 1700 ◦C and its main components are SiO2, Al2O3 and MgO. Additionally it consists of chrome, ferrous/ferric oxides and Cao.The typical composition of the ferrochrome slags are 30% Si02, 23% MgO, 26% Al203 and 2% CaO.The chrome content in the slag is about 8% and the iron content 4% respectively.

How is ferrochrome slag produced?
The typical process by which ferrochrome and its by-product or waste slag is produced can be outlined as follows:
The chrome ore is added to the ferrochrome production furnaces, with other raw materials such as coal, coke, dolomite and quartzite for the production of ferrochrome. Within the furnaces an electric current, generated by means of carbon electrodes, melts the raw materials and reduces the chromium from the thvalent state in the ore to a zero valent state in the metallic form. The smelting point of the slag has to be higher than the metal smelting point, because metal Is heated up by using the slag liquid phase. The densities of the liquid slag versus the metal allows them to be separated in the furnaces.
Metal and slag are tapped from the furnace through the tap hole. The temperature of the slag in tapping slag is 1700°C and that of the ferrochrome is 1600°C." The metal is cooled and solidified in casting bays. It is then crushed and screened into different size fractions to satisfy customer requirements. The slag is air cooled.

Ferrochrome slag jigging process is mainly to recover the valuable ferrochrome alloys from the slag in a forms that will be as far as possible directly saleable. Recycling the alloy in slag can not only reduce the waste of valuable resources, but also get rich returns. The processed slag are been used mainly in the road and civil construction industries, and in producing refractories.

Jigging separation works on the difference in density between slag and alloy.The density of ferrochrome is 6.4 g/cm3, the main components of ferrochrome slag are aluminium oxide,alcium oxide and silicon oxide, the density of these slag is 2.84 g/cm3, there are big difference in density, so jigging process is an ideal method to recover ferrochrome from slag.
After crush the slag to make entrapped metal liberated, then feed to jig machine.The motor drive piston move reciprocally, push and pull the separation medium(water) in jigging chamber, make the water push upward and fall downward regularly,form pulsation motion. Under the action of pulsated water,the material will move on its height by density: the heavy material with big density will move to bottom layer, the light material with small density(slag) will move to top layer.The formed layer with different denstiy are removed separately as alloy and slag, then the slag jigging process is complete.
